Bank State Branch (BSB)

The Bank State Branch, better known as BSB, is a bank identifier system used in Australia. Similar to the UK sort code system that was developed in the 1960s, Australia developed a similar system in the 1970s in order to have a unified payment processing system. Today the BSB is processing paper and electronic transactions and identification numbers are given to both banks and financial institutions. A BSB number consist of 6 digits, a combination of the bank identifier number and a specific branch number.
